Subliminal ads with political figures

If I recall my Psychology class notes correctly, in studying how people are influenced by familiarity of a person's face, research showed that the more often most people have seen a face, the more most people will tend to "like" the person...because our brains tend to like the familiar, and pictures embedded in our memory serve that purpose. Couldn't this concept be applied to the general public through repetitive pop-up advertising? I think it could. So I am starting to wonder why I am being presented with so many photos of a former politician and his family as I click on every page here. It almost feels like a subliminal political "image management" campaign and I wonder if this is happening just to me.

Maybe I really need a new computer?

I don't think it's your computer as I see it too. However .... I do not think SI has any control over what ads pop up?

Maybe it's just an internet thing. For instance, I've been looking for a certain item to buy and now on every site I visit, ads for that item pops up. I've also been trying to help my sister find a Maltese rescue dog and now I have ... Maltese doggie ads constantly, which isn't a bad thing. smile

Jeanniegirl, why do so many dog ads pop up for you, LOL? I cannot imagine why...

I know we have to enable cookies for this site and I suppose I don't disable them again every time I check news feeds, which I limit to 2 text-heavy sites. (I am not a fan of "tabloid format" news these days, which is now almost everywhere; it eats up a lot of bandwidth just to look at celebrity photos.) I try hard to clear my browser data and I always keep site tracking options disabled, so I have no idea why these ads are suddenly so prevalent. Someone has to be paying for that kind of exposure, you would think. Just odd on SI, that's why I was wondering if it's just my computer.

Yes, political ads on SI laugh But as I said, they probably have no control of ads popping up.

Even if you're visiting text based sites your browser uses that to target you, or if you use your phone, or look at facebook. I find one such political face only gets uglier and more making me want to throat punch it every time I see it. laugh

I've been doing some home goods shopping, and a pop up for Wayfair has been showing up for a couple of weeks.

I just checked on my son's flight status, he's on his way here, as soon as I logged on to SI, an ad for United appeared. laugh

Ad-choice is not controlled in any way by SI.
Look – the algorithm for what you might be interested in can be way off.
I don’t look at porn or dating sites or anything of that nature. My browsing is probably 95%
Work-related
Relationship sites like SI
Fishing forums or sites
Car repairs and DIY

Yet when I go to SI without logging in as Bigger I get pestered with adverts letting me know there is a lonely young single Russian woman craving for my attention…

I think the algorithm isn’t any better than:
Hmm… he’s into fishing, IT, DIY and car-repairs so clearly a middle-aged man. He goes to sites that are about relationships… This man NEEDS a Russian Bride! laugh

😂🤣

Exactly: the bass akwards decisions of AI.

I always clear my browser and all web data off of my iPad, have site tracking blocked, everything I can to prevent profiling, but who knows how much gets through....maybe I don't want to know....

Thanks for letting us know these type ads showing up are outside the control of this site. It only happens on my Safari browser, not my laptop.
