How are y'all getting along up in the truly arctic areas of our continent?

Dragn, I'm especially thinking of you, your family and all your livestock.

I'm also wondering about a lot of SI'rs in Northern states/Provinces and the mid-west. If you have time to check in, let us know how you're dealing with this weather.

I am snowed and nasty weathered OUT of the Midwest for now. It is full on nasty double digit negative there. As soon as it is practical and safe, I do have to go back to finish dealing with the post D stuff there.

But for now though I am safe and warm and resting at the new apartment I share in a southern town. I had a surprise minor surgery—tiny skin spot turned into surgery with biopsy yesterday. So today will be low key. I have another week before I get stitches out.

The new apartment is a couple of floors above a coffee shop. I don’t even have to go outside to get to it. So I might shower and venture down for a cup of chai or a treat later. As tempting as it is, I don’t do this often because I am recovering from the financial hits I took related to that which we don’t talk about in this forum. But it might be a pick me up with the temperatures dropping today and the pain from the surprise surgery.

It is weird having no responsibilities for even as much as a goldfish. Generally we have had responsibilities for pets and livestock through all kinds of weather most of my life. Prayers and positive thoughts for everyone going through the bad weather, especially with animals in their care.

We have had nasty weather all around us and temps are falling. The worst of it seems to have missed us tho.

All of our friends we have checked on are safe and prepared. My pre D home that I lost in the D is not far from the apartment but at a higher altitude and towards the storm. So we invited shift workers and hospital staff that are friends or friends of friends to let us know if they need to stay with us at the apartment until the roads are safe again. It might be canned soup, oatmeal and make your own coffee until I get fully recovered from the little surgery. But up the hill as we call it got up to 6 inches of snow and temps dropping made even main roads impassable throughout the night. We will see if we get any guests. We have lots of hot cocoa and coffee on hand just in case.

The snowplow must have gone past the apartment at least a dozen times in a couple of hours last night because it is downtown on a Main Street. My apartment mate is from the Midwest originally too so we had a little
There was a dusting of snow in the little park across the street. Maybe a half inch.
Nonetheless we greatly appreciate the snowplow drivers scraping the mostly dry streets even if they seem to not have a clue what they are doing compared to the ones we are used to.

It's been subzero here in the Lou since ce Friday pm.
I have not left my house and my sweet hubby took care of all the outside stuff all weekend.
I did venture out for a while yesterday to play with the dogs. They seem unfazed by it and we're rolling in the snow.
We got today and then Friday and Saturday if more cold then we are out of it.

I absolutely HATE winter and am thankful we don't have chickens to tend to this year.

Tush, I have family just across and upriver from you, but in 70 years I've never heard your home town referred to as "in the Lou!" It would be you, cracking me up with the toilet bowl reference... 😂

For a week now, one of my cousins there has been caring for her parents further upriver and she has had to walk her 90 pound doggo in -16 weather, because she didn't board him and her parents don't have a dog-size yard. She complained that the dog was taking his sweet time to do his business. Ours do the same; they have fur coats and they quickly figure out that the longer they take, the more fun they can have outside the people house, 'specially with the white stuff.

She sent me a picture of her 88 year old Mom in their kitchen, bundled up with a head scarf, looking miserable. She always has a hard time with cold weather. Yet their house has radiator heat so their second floor is overly warm. I'm grateful the utilities are handling the load. Service people everywhere are under-appreciated, but I know these plants don't run themselves fully automatically. Our electric power, our drinking water, and our sewage treatments that make life civilized for us takes dedication to their jobs from many people we never can thank. THANKS to them!

I am just south of Tushnurse and SICK of this weather! We were warned and I did have my well house re-insulated and have a new heater out there so I do have water and no other utilities have failed. However, for some strange reason the water lines to my washer are frozen up so I can't do laundry. Hopefully they will thaw without any damage to the lines. I haven't been out of the house since Friday except to take my two small dogs out and to feed the outside cats, who seem to be doing just fine. They reside in my garage. We didn't get a lot of snow but what we got is hanging on as it's 3 degrees this morning. A rise in temps is not expected until mid-week, next week.

The only positive thought is we will survive and soon Spring will be here.

Jeanniegirl, what a funny coincidence that you mention your well house, as today it's on my list to go up to my well house on the hill and check down inside the concrete block underground vault where the pressure tank is, to make sure the electric heat lamp is 'on' down there and to make sure the insulated hatch is closed...probably few folks even can imagine what we're talking about! 😮

We seem to have escaped so much of what others are experiencing this week. We got some snow overnight, but today when I ran an errand, when I left the apartment it was snowing; two miles away it was sleeting, and two miles after that it was raining. When I got back to the apt 45 minutes later, it had turned to rain here. It has all given me the chance to start to break in my new snow boots I bought last week. They are saying tonight, all the moisture that's on the ground will freeze when the temps drop, so tomorrow will be icy. I keep looking at the silver lining of 'we're no longer living in the Midwest, which is so brutally cold now', so that helps my mental state.

We are expecting to drop to highs in the low 20s by the weekend, which is unfortunate timing as that's when we move out of our apt into the house (FINALLY!). Well, it's round 1 - round 2, which is moving everything in the storage unit into the house happens a week later, so fingers crossed that weather in a week and a half doesn't get any worse than it is now. I know low 20s for the highs sounds downright balmy to many of you here; I'm sure the movers will appreciate cold weather when they start to work really hard. I just would prefer no ice when they're moving our valuables!!

The word of the day is 'brisk' in Pennsylvania. It is 8 degrees.

At least we are half way through January!!

I am a bit chuffed (a new favorite word) because I have a weekend date to the coastal area this weekend. I have been in coastal NC on new years and it’s been fun. This is just cold.

Again nothing to worry about.

[ the same person I have known for years so perfectly safe even if they are former military and carry rope and shovel in their trunk lol I carry a trunk full of stuff since I used to work in all kinds of weather too]

So we will be looking for some indoor fun things to do. Maybe some museums, dining, coffee shops, shopping. Probably not a kayak on the bay kinda weekend.

He’s buying a new awd pickup this week (one of what I call the Barbie sized ones..a Maverick) so hopefully it will be prepped and ready to leave the dealership tomorrow.

We plan to be safe but also to rock the weather as best we can!

Western Canada here. Minus 18c with an 18cm dump yesterday. Buddy just dropped off a load of firewood, so I'm doing well. Heading off to a wintery cottage for the weekend. Was a gift from my GF. Looking forward to a very relaxing time together.

Ontario here. About -4F (-20C) for a few days. Our area got a lot of snow but rather typical for January. Snowmobile clubs busy working on getting trails groomed but lakes in my area are not frozen thick enough yet for ice fishing - will be another short season for those winter sports. In my case house is insulated for the typical winter temps, gas fireplace to assist furnace and a backup generator in place ready for the inevitable power outages. I feel for the places where atypical weather has descended and infrastructure not equipped to handle. I expect Dragn is fighting with a snowblower or tractor right now and adding extra bedding for the livestock. Not a chance we could keep up to our driveway & parking area with a snowblower and no place to store a tractor so we pay for a plow service, thankfully they've been great. Snow tires on all vehicles so as long as visibility not poor is okay to get to town for groceries. Days are getting longer so I know spring is peeking around the corner.

We are having a blast. Lucky for us we don’t have to be out in the weather and it is warming up where we are. The Ford Maverick Tremor (aka the Barbie doll truck) is a road boss. We got to where we were headed and had a great time. (We wouldn’t ordinarily head out in bad weather but we had rescheduled once for weather already and we knew we would beat the storm and be safe today.)

I think MAV is gonna get a lot of fun trips in its future. It even has a "sand" setting to go with its "slippery roads" and ECO settings lol

I name my vehicles, so asked my friend what he was going to name the Maverick. He just looked at me.

It has not been named yet, but I just know "he" (I am calling it MAV for now) was looking at the "bad weather starting soon" signs flashing on the interstate and thinking "let’s go". Not sure what he thought when 3 huge deer tried to cross the road in front and side of "him". I imagine the deer are getting ready for what’s coming.

Of course MAV the off road edition Maverick is young and not wise like us. What MAV doesn’t know is we are going to stay off the bad roads, enjoy indoor stuff like movies, museums, the pool, maybe a little walk to a coffee shop and head out only when the weather is nice again.

Shehawk ... it's great to see someone else who names all their vehicles. I've always done that.

Right now, with our weather, Baby Jag convertible is in the garage covered up with her blankie. She is my 4th Jaguar and they've all had names. She is just known by Baby Jag because she's the youngest. My 'get around' vehicle is an older Buick SUV and one of the most dependable cars I've ever owned. I call her Boss Lady because ice, snow -- nothing stops her. She just does her job and GOES.

Northern Alberta, Canada here. Currently-32 Celsius. But over the past week it has been down to -44 and below -50 with the wind chill. At -40 Fahrenheit and Celsius are the same temperature!!

Lots of frozen batteries in vehicles, bring ‘em in, thaw, charge and off ya go. Only go somewhere if necessary and carry extra warm winter gear with you. The service people are the best. Neighbour had her large propane tank gel at these temperatures. (her whole house runs on propane as opposed to natural gas). So her furnace was not running properly. Out comes the service guy and identifies the problem. Heating applied to the tank and furnace is a go again.

People adapt to where they live. I’ll take this cold spell over living where the temperature gets to over 100 F for long periods.

Sisoon, Baby Jag is a artic white XK8 convertible with camel leather interior, to match the convertible top. Previously I had two different XJ Jaguars and also a Cherry Red XK8 convertible. The red was one of only 300 XK8 Jags manufactured with that particular color of red. The Baby Jag I have now is almost a classic since it's a 2006. It has under 50K miles on it. The XK8 convertibles all share just about the same body style, no matter the year.

But they are definitely not snow and ice cars. I once got caught in a horrible blizzard with the Red XK8 in Michigan. It was really scary. XK8 Jags are very low to the ground.

I've always loved cars. So did my Dad. In high school he left me drive his classic '57 baby blue Chevy. I guess if I have an addiction, it's cars I've owned a MGB, A Triumph TR6. I just 'retired' and sold an older Mercedes. It makes me sad to sell a vehicle and I miss them and sometimes regret selling them later. Several times I've owned up to 5 cars but only have a 3 car garage.

Definitely the Midwest is a no go on low clearance.

I know what people mean about those super low temperatures and stuff freezing, batteries failing etc. I have lived a lot of that so am not too said that I am weathered OUT of the Midwest right now.

"MAV" the Ford Maverick has just the right amount of clearance and he picked up his military "free" national parks pass today. I bought my date a national parks passport and an updated guidebook as an early birthday present. And off we went.

"MAV" used his Tremor off-road package to have some fun at one of the national parks today (onroad but rough roads). "He"was a bit annoyed at all the bad drivers passing him on the scenic parkway going Wayyy over the speed limit. I told him that’s just how some people roll, but don’t be surprised if the park rangers give them a different type of park souvenir "passport" for their speeding….

We are way below freezing now and temps falling in an area of the country where snowplows and low temp road treatments are a few and far between. So the adventure is over for the day:)
