Hi All,
A few days have passed from this post, thanks again for your guidance.
There are these parts that are an incredible accurate picture of what is going on right now.
foreverlabeled
This is exactly why he cannot feel the change yet. Niceness is not the metric. Commitment is not the metric. He is not looking for loving behavior. He is looking for evidence that the internal engine that allowed the betrayal has been dismantled. That takes time and repetition. That doesn't mean you aren't doing enough.
Thanks for clarifying my "grey areas" while also showing empathy. I see and agree everything that you said. I just find it very confusing to translate my "work" into tangible actions. They are less visible in the immediate. And I really want to do all that needs doing. I am halfway through the book you recommended btw, and it really hit how often I abdicated accountability in my life. I mentioned that to my H and tried to open a conversation... it didn't land very well in the moment. But I also understand that there is no magic recipe and how some conversations can be upsetting.
Hikingout:
My being very wifely and taking things off his plate and planning pleasant experiences didn’t go completely unappreciated, but to him he felt like I was trying to normalize our relationship when he felt everything but normal.
I received these exact words yesterday. That I am trying to lead a normal life and have normal days when nothing is normal. That I am being very wifely, "but that is not the point".
And I feel "clueless" because I am not rug sweeping and nothing feels normal to me either. I am not trying to have normal days and forget about it all.
I think about infidelity 100% of the time, I dig deep, I religiously read this forum, I have changed IC to dig deeper, I am learning to sit in the uncomfortable without feeling a victim.
Hikingout, when I read your posts, I see many similarity with my own story. How I felt before the affair, about how I used to operate etc. Resentment played a big part. I felt I was doing things for everyone all the time (now I see I was the first one to neglect myself), and ultimately I felt I was only a "tool" for my H. Back then, I bitterly joked I was his project manager, not his wife. Since DDay, I worked so hard on this. On understanding this and changing. Even my H said he can see the change here. And I have not stopped the work. This is why I feel lost when I receive the above words. Because I genuinely still cannot see how I could go differently about our days. This is not to go "against" your comment, just to clarify where I am at.
I will try to keep reflecting on the words you all said.
Unhinged (and DaddyDom)
I think this is what most wayward spouses fail to understand or accept. This may be what you feel you are missing. You're trying to mend something that cannot be mended, as DaddyDom wrote with his cake analogy.
The only way forward is building a new relationship and for most betrayed spouses, especially so early on, how to do that is a total mystery.
I thinks this could be it. It's a total mystery. While I understand your words, in reality probably we both don't see a "tangible" difference in mending VS building something new. I know the M is dead (that cake is smashed) but in the every day actions... tangible stuff... I don't see that difference so clearly.
I have been on here since January 26 (not much, but I read nearly every post and also went back to older threads, etc.) and I do tell myself consistently: "the old M is gone, you are building a new one. Let go of the outcome". And I have discussed this with my H. And me being (on top of the other things) very "wifely" and supportive and caring is part of that. I let go of resentment, pettiness, those unpleasant things that were there before. Does my H see this? Yes. Does he like it? Yes. Would he have preferred the old M with all its issues but without infidelity rather than a new perfect marriage and perfect me with infidelity in the history? YES
And he is open to the chance of reconciliation. And here we go back to the title of my post
(I want to stress I am only reflecting on your words, not arguing or challenging them).
BackfromtheStorm
Paradoxically that feels often like acting, performing, even if your intentions are honest.
And so it is perceived as not enough, like you are trying to please instead of being remorseful and regretful.
Another good description of what is going on. My H actually said he can see I am remorseful, he also said he sees I am trying to please him and do nice things for him. But he also says that I miss the point. I don't address with everyday actions what I have done.
And again, I feel stuck because all I think about and all my current behaviour is based on what I have done.
Chaos
Restore justice - what a BS craves so badly but what can't be done.
This. If only justice could be somehow restored, we would be halfway through things.
Thanks for replying to my post. About my story: going immediately NC and not mourning the AP are probably the only two things I did right from the beginning. I have taken full ownership of my actions, and I have been doing IC and intensive reading about infidelity, psychology etc. For a few good months. After DDay I was in full blameshifting mode (e.g. I shouldn't have done what I have done, but maybe if you were this and that.... I wouldn't have.... etc) until I landed on here (SI) in January.
Thanks to the others (Amy and WBFA) who also have stopped by this post. I will read though your comments again.
